The Journey Begins: South Baltimore
Standing as a sentinel at the most southern point of the Byway is the Old Pabst Brewery, a neo-gothic, red brick structure (complete with a crenellated tower). It stands watch over the neighborhood of South Baltimore. Primarily a residential neighborhood, South Baltimore features a large collection of modest rowhomes built before 1920 (and possibly the largest concentration of intact rowhouse blocks in the world).
Prohibition in the 1920s kept the brewery’s doors closed, but didn’t keep South Baltimore dry. The neighborhood was noted for its speakeasies. Today the neighborhood’s taverns and restaurants (passwords and secret knocks no longer required) serve as friendly meeting spots for residents and visitors alike.
