Off the Byway

Discover Charles Street > Your Charles Street Journey > Off the Byway

Within a short distance from the northern terminus of the byway are two excellent attractions: an 18th-century country estate that was the nation's first National Historic Site and an impressive museum to firefighters and the equipment they use.

  • Fire Museum of Maryland (1301 York Road, Lutherville, Md.) — The Fire Museum of Maryland has one of the largest firefighting-related collections on display. Among its collection are 42 antique fire apparatus, memorabilia, fire-fighting equipment, models, and photographs.
  • Hampton National Historic Site (535 Hampton Lane, Towson, Md.) — This National Park Service site preserves the buildings and grounds of an 18th-century country estate, including a manor house, gardens, and slave quarters.
